How To Use Natural Shampoo
(one simple trick to make it lather perfectly!)
One unfortunate thing about natural, non-toxic home and beauty products is that they can sometimes be harder to use, or in other words, not work “as well”. For example, that might bring to mind a gentle bathroom cleaner you’ve tried that doesn’t quite cut through the grime as effectively as the harsher chemical cleaner that you’re used to. (I’m still looking for a good oven cleaner/method, so comment below if you know of something!)
This can mean it takes more time or effort to use these natural products, and as a result, means you don’t really want to use them. Well, I do believe that there is always a solution to this problem and always the right product out there for you. When something works differently than what you’re used to, there may just be a bit of a learning curve to get used to it!
When it comes to natural shampoos, or ones that are sulfate-free, one thing you will notice is that they don’t foam up as much as other shampoos. This can mean you’re left feeling like your hair isn’t fully washed (even though the foaming action is not necessarily an indication of how well it’s cleaning). However, I do find that the foaming action allows me to spread the shampoo more evenly throughout my hair, and is just overall easier to use, on top of making it “feel” like it’s cleaning better.
Well, the good news is that I have discovered one simple trick that makes natural shampoo foam up nicely, making it easier to use. And here it is- you need to do a quick “pre-wash” with a small amount of product. I use about a loonie-sized amount. Then rinse it out and continue with a second wash using the amount of shampoo that you’d normally use when washing your hair. The pre-wash can be very quick and just focused on the roots of your hair. For whatever reason, giving your hair that quick pre-wash allows the shampoo to foam up in your hair for the second wash. It’s almost as if the shampoo will only foam up when it’s being used on clean hair!
So if you’ve struggled to get good results with a natural sulfate-free shampoo, be sure to give this a try! You’ll see that during the first pre-wash step, the shampoo won’t create much of a lather, but then it will for the second wash!
I discovered this trick by accident after feeling like my hair needed a second wash, and it is now my go-to method for washing my hair. I’m so glad I discovered this so that now I can pass this information onto you!
