How Decluttering Saves You Money
Over the last year, as I’ve spent more time reducing our belongings and making our home more functional, I learned some surprising things about decluttering. While it may sound like getting rid of belongings will only mean that you’ve wasted your money, I learned that there are a lot of ways in which decluttering actually saves you money.
Here are all the ways that getting serious about decluttering your home can save you money! I hope it inspires you to get your home organized and clutter-free! It’s something I’ve become passionate about, and it’s a great way to improve your wellbeing and help make your home a place of rest, instead of stress.
If you’ve been struggling at all with simplifying and letting things go, be sure to check out my other post here about decluttering– the concepts I talk about in it have changed my life!
You buy less things moving forward (less impulse-buying!)
After decluttering your home, which can be a lot of work, you become much more careful and picky about new things coming into your home. As your home becomes more functional and easier to maintain, you start to see your belongings in a different way, which includes new items that you might be bringing into your home.
When considering new items to buy, you start to ask yourself questions like “do I really want to clean and maintain this item?” “Do I really want to store this item and add it to my “inventory?” “Could I make do without this?” “Where will I store it when I’m not using it?” A lot of the time, we realize that we enjoy the ease of maintaining a simplified home, and would prefer not to have more items to take care of, which leads to buying less new items in general.
You will find that you are far less likely to impulse-buy. Who would have thought that getting rid of items would lead to buying less new items?

Your home becomes easier to clean, freeing up time and energy for other things
In our society right now, we are all running on a deficit- a deficit of energy and time. These are both way more precious than material things.
A simplified home is one that is much easier to clean! You don’t have to move things out of the way in order to wipe surfaces or clean the floor. There are less items to put away, and less items to clean and maintain. All of this leads to having more time and energy for other things. This may mean you have more time to spend on your side hustle to earn an income, more time to work on DIY projects that save you money, more time to cook meals from scratch, more time to tend to a garden, etc.
It has a domino effect that can benefit your life in a lot of ways, including in ways that save you money!

You’re more likely to use up what you have, & become more creative
When you feel more motivated not to bring new items into your home, you find ways to go without certain things you thought you needed or wanted. You find new ways to use things you already have, and it forces you to be more creative.
Being creative with the belongings you already have leads to not buying things that maybe aren’t actually necessary for you.
Groceries don’t get lost or forgotten about
Decluttering your pantry, fridge/freezer, and cupboards is just as important as decluttering other areas of your home. You most likely have expired items in there right now! Removing the excess and the things you’ll never use allows your pantry to be more organized.
When your kitchen is decluttered, it becomes less likely that things get forgotten about, and you’ll have less food waste. Not only that, but your kitchen will function better, making cooking and cleaning easier. This will help you to feel more motivated to cook, making sure that your groceries are used up before they go bad. You’ll also save money by cooking at home rather than going out to eat!

Prevents you from buying duplicates
How many times have you had to buy something because you couldn’t find the one that you already own? Or maybe you didn’t realize you had some lightbulbs stored here, and some stored there, and ended up buying a new package that you didn’t actually need.
When your home has less items in it, it automatically becomes more organized. It’s easier to see things in cabinets, and easier to find what you’re looking for. You no longer struggle to find random things like batteries, light bulbs, etc. because you know where everything is and can easily see what’s there. This prevents you from buying duplicates that you didn’t actually need!
It’s easier to appreciate what you have
When you have less belongings in general, and have only what you love and truly use, you learn to appreciate those items a lot more. This leads to taking better care of your belongings, repairing them instead of replacing them (when possible), and only replacing when absolutely necessary.

Earn money by selling
After learning more about decluttering and learning different mindsets about why we hold onto certain things, it allowed me to be ok with selling items that I realized I was only keeping for “just in case”.
I’ve earned over a thousand dollars by selling items that we weren’t using (some of this was my wedding dress and furniture pieces). This freed up so much storage space and allowed me to finally set up our office the way I wanted to. Holding onto these items was literally preventing us from living in our (small) home the way we needed to.
Selling items rather than donating isn’t for everyone and every situation (I’ve donated a ton of items too), but if you have the time and patience, it is totally worth it. It feels great to recoup some of the money that you spent on the items, and at the same time frees up precious space in your home.
I hope this has motivated you and inspired you to simplify your home and declutter! Save this post to Pinterest to motivate you again later!
